PERSONNEL AND PROCEDURES
_ All environmental work described in this workplan will be performed under the direction of a PG&E
fCalifornia Registered Geologist. A qualified field geologist will log the exploratory borings and the
_ monitoring wells, collect subsurface soil and groundwater samples, and coordinate delivery of the samples
to a State of California-certified analytical laboratory. The Registered Geologist will oversee the
exploratory program during all phases of work, conduct site visits during field activities, review the data
and analyses, and participate in report preparation and other agency submittals. The assessment
procedures (e.g., permitting, sampling protocol, chain-of-custody, Health and Safety Plan, etc.) will follow
lSan Joaquin County and LUFT manual guidelines.
UNDERGROUND UTILITIES
Prior to conducting any drilling activities at the site, the location of underground utilities will be checked by
reviewing available blueprints of the site and by contacting Underground Service Alert. PG&E crews will
be utilized to locate all underground gas supply lines. In addition, a soil probe and/or magnetic locator will
be used at proposed drilling locations where the presence of underground utilities remain unknown. The
upper 3 to 5 feet of each borehole will be advanced using a hand auger or similar device.
DRILLING AND SAMPLING PROCEDURES
] Five soil borings will be advanced at the locations shown on Figure 5 to facilitate the collection of soil
samples; the boreholes will be used for monitoring well installation. The purpose of the sampling is to
define the lateral extent of petroleum hydrocarbons in the subsurface soils and groundwater at the site.
Should the results of field screening suggest that soil and/or groundwater is impacted in any of the
boreholes proposed for monitoring well installation, the borehole will be abandoned and an additional
1 borehole will be drilled at a location about 50 feet further from the site.
J
The boreholes will be drilled using a drill rig equipped with 8-or 10-inch O.D. hollow-stem, continuous-
J flight augers. The exact number and location of the boreholes may change based on conditions encountered
J during the field activities. The exploratory borings will be drilled and sampled to the first occurrence of
groundwater, however, sampling may continue below the water table if deemed necessary for assessing
subsurface conditions. Samples of the subsurface soils will be collected at intervals no greater than 5 feet
using a 2-inch or 2%:-inch I.D. split spoon sampler, a standard penetration sampler, or a continuous coring
device. All drill bits, drill rods, augers, etc. will be steam-cleaned prior to each use.
J
cca/03/10/95 09:38 AM(0688brpt.doc/ntw12) 4-3
