Current enforceable and recommended exposure limits for potential site contaminants are presented in
Table A-1. The attached Material Safety Data Sheets present additional hazard information on these
compounds.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
A minimum of US EPA Level D protection will be required within the exclusion zone for any workers engaged
in sample collection or other similar activities. Level D protection will include:
1. Hardhat (optional, no moving overhead equipment).
2. Boots with steel toe.
3. Chemical resistant disposable gloves (when handling materials with elevated levels of
petroleum hydrocarbons).
4. Disposable Tyvek® coverall (when in direct contact with materials containing elevated
levels of petroleum hydrocarbons).
Level C protection will be required if PID readings exceed 50 PPM in the worker's breathing zone. Level C
protection will consist of:
1. Hardhat (optional, no moving overhead equipment).
2. Boots with steel toe.
3. Disposable Tyveko coverall.
4. Safety glasses, splash goggles, or face shield.
5. Chemical resistant inner and outer gloves.
6. MSHA/NIOSH-approved half-face or full-face air-purifying respirator with organic vapor
cartridges.
If the PID readings exceed 200 PPM in the workers breathing zone, all work shall stop and the exclusion
zone shall be evacuated.
DECONTAMINATION
During all field operations, care will be taken to minimize contact with soils containing elevated levels of
petroleum hydrocarbons. When leaving the exclusion zone, loose debris will be removed from protective
clothing by brushing or rinsing. Gloves and boots will be washed in a 5% solution of trisodium phosphate
detergent and rinsed with clean potable water. All rinseate will be disposed of after laboratory results are
received. All used respirator cartridges, gloves and coveralls will be placed in a drum on-site for subsequent
disposal. No one will exit the exclusion zone with contaminated clothing or equipment.
cca/10-7-92/8913a/JAWP13 A-2
