APPENDIX F:
DATA USABILITY SUMMARY
INTRODUCTION
The Benham Companies, LLC, an SAIC Company(SAIC-Benham) evaluated the analytical data
for soil and groundwater samples collected at US Can—Welty Road(the site) located in
Vernalis, California. This data usability summary presents the results of the data review and
validation process. SAIC-Benham collected environmental samples on behalf of Chevron
Environmental Management Company to delineate the lateral extent of petroleum-affected soil
and groundwater. Soil, groundwater, and water-matrix quality control (QC) samples were
collected between July 20 and 22, 2010. The samples collected were as follows:
• Nine soil samples
• Four groundwater samples
• One groundwater matrix spike(MS) sample
• One groundwater matrix spike duplicate (MSD) sample
• One groundwater field duplicate sample
• Two water-matrix trip blank(TB) samples
• Two equipment rinsate blanks
• One water-matrix field blank
Lancaster Laboratories, Inc. (Lancaster)performed all the analyses on the samples. The data
were reported in laboratory reports 1203972, 1203973, 1203974, 1204353, and 1204354.
Lancaster is certified by the State of California through the Department of Health Services to
perform environmental analyses. Soil and groundwater samples were analyzed using methods
contained in United States Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)publication SW-846.
Soil samples were analyzed for the following constitutents:
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes(BTEX)by EPA Method 8260B.
• Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)by EPA Method 8270C with selective ion
monitoring(SIM).
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) quantified as crude oil (TPHc), carbon range CIO-
C36i by EPA Method 8015 Modified.
Groundwater and water-matrix samples were analyzed for one or more of the following
constituents:
• BTEX by EPA Method 8260B.
• PAHs by EPA Method 8270C with large-volume injection(LVI).
• TPH quantified as diesel (TPHd), carbon range CIO-C25, by EPA Method 8015 Modified;
a silica gel clean-up procedure based on EPA Method SW3630 was also performed on
samples with TPHd detections to remove non-target biogenic compounds.
• Alkalinity, bicarbonate, and carbonate by Standard Method(SM)20 2320 B.
F-1 The Benham Companies.LLC
