Appendix C:Previous Environmental Activities
SAIC 2009 CENTRAL VALLEY RWQCB SPLIT GROUNDWATER
SAMPLING EVENT
Prior to issuing approval to destroy wells MW-1 through MW-3,the Central Valley RWQCB
requested an additional event where split samples would be collected and submitted to an
independent laboratory. On July 15, 2009, SAIC and Central Valley RWQCB staff collected
split groundwater samples from MW-3. Concentrations of TPHd were reported at 63 gg/L and
no compounds were reported above the respective screening levels in the SAIC sample. The
Central Valley RWQCB sample indicated a TPHd concentration of less than 100 gg/L, which
was similar to SAIC's result. No COPCs were detected in the Central Valley RWQCB sample.
ADJACENT PROPERTIES
• Ahern Road—Vernalis: SAIC proposed separating the off-site portion of the site
investigation area northwest of the property boundary. Ahern Road—Vernalis includes
borings SB-38 through SB-41 and SB-43. The Benham Companies, LLC, an SAIC
Company(SAIC-Benham),prepared a soil and groundwater investigation work plan 17
which was subsequently accepted by the Central Valley RWQCB 18. The site
investigation is currently pending.
• Vernalis Pump Station: The former Vernalis Pump Station is located at the southeast
corner of Highway 33 and Welty Road. The former pump station, part of the former
OVP system, was investigated by SAIC and others between 1995 and 2008. Five
groundwater monitoring wells associated with the site were properly destroyed by SAIC
in 2009.19 SAIC-Benham completed an HHSE of the subject property in 2010, in which
results indicated that the site does not pose a health risk to future residents.20
• CPS (formerly Western Farm Service): CPS is located at the northwest corner of the
intersection of Highway 33 and Welty Road. CPS has stored and distributed bulk liquid
and dry fertilizers on its facility since 1969. Records indicate this site contained a
10,000-gallon diesel UST, and 5,000-gallon and 10,000-gallon gasoline USTs. The
USTs were removed in 1987, and their approximate locations are shown on Figure 2 of
the main report. Wells were installed at the CPS facility to monitor concentrations of
agricultural chemicals in groundwater, and from 2005 to 2007 SAIC collected samples
from WFSMW-1 for analysis of the COPCs.
• Former Union Oil Service Station: A service station operated from 1972 to the mid
1980s at the northeast corner of the intersection of Highway 33 and Welty Road.
Historical records are not available for this site; therefore, the location and status of the
service station USTs are unknown.
17.SAIC-Benham,2010.
