APPENDIX E:
ANALYTICAL METHODS AND LABORATORY REPORTS
Soil samples were analyzed for the following Historical Pipeline Portfolio—Bakersfield to
Richmond(HPP-BTR)constituents, using methods contained in United States Environmental
Protection Agency(EPA)publication SW-8461:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as crude oil(TPHc)by EPA Method 8015
Modified(C10 to C36);
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes(BTEX)by EPA Method 8260B; and
• Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)by EPA Method 8270 using selective ion
monitoring.
Groundwater samples were analyzed for the following HPP-BTR constituents, using methods
contained in EPA publication SW-846:
• TPH quantified as diesel (TPHd) by EPA Method 8015B Modified(CIO to C25). Silica-
gel cleanup was performed on sample extracts that exceeded the laboratory reporting
limit;
• BTEX by EPA Method 8260B (using a 25-milliliter purge to attain HPP-BTR Risk
Assessment Detection Limits);
• PAHs by EPA Method 8270C (using large-volume injection to attain HPP-BTR Risk
Assessment Detection Limits); and
• General Minerals: Total dissolved solids(TDS)by EPA Method 160.1; sulfate, chloride,
nitrate(as nitrogen), and nitrite (as nitrogen)by EPA 300.0; specific conductance by EPA
120.1; Kjeldahl nitrogen by EPA 351.2; total phosphorus by EPA 365.1; ammonia(as
nitrogen)by 350.2; alkalinity(as calcium carbonate [CaCO3]),bicarbonate (as CaCO3),
carbonate(as CaCO3), and hardness (as CaCO3)by SM 20 2320B; and boron, sodium,
calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, and potassium by SW846 6010B.
QUALITY ASSURANCE PROCEDURES
Quality assurance (QA) samples were collected to verify that no outside sources of
contamination affected the groundwater samples. Laboratory-provided deionized water was
decanted:
• Directly from the deionized water container into laboratory-provided sample containers
(QA-Field);
• Through the plastic tubing used in sampling and into laboratory-provided sample
containers(QA-Tubing); and
• Through the clean pre-pack well screen and into laboratory-provided sample containers
(QA-Screen).
1.
