1.0 INTRODUCTION
Chevron Pipe Line Company (CPL) has contracted Radian International LLC
(Radian) to conduct a limited groundwater investigation at 35275 Welty Road, Vernalis,
California(see Figure 1). Vernalis is located in southern San Joaquin County.
The purpose of this investigation is to determine if groundwater has been
impacted by trichloroethylene (TCE) from historic operations at the site. CPL will use this
information to facilitate a decision to accept environmental responsibility for TCE at the site.
Available analytical data indicate that petroleum hydrocarbons are present in the soil and
groundwater at 35275 Welty Road. In addition, TCE associated with non-CPL activities has
been identified in soil at the same locations where petroleum hydrocarbons were detected. To
date, TCE has not been detected in groundwater; however, during previous investigations the
detection limit for TCE was elevated because of sample dilution.
2.0 SITE CHARACTERIZATION
2.1 Background
The 35275 Welty Road site is currently occupied by the U.S. Can Company,
which manufactures steel cans for packaging purposes. (The site was formerly occupied by
Hunter Container Corporation.) The area of interest is the northeast side of the Can Fabrication
Plant building, where a condensate outlet pipe was formerly located (see Figure 2). This outlet
may have been a source of TCE to the soil and groundwater at the site.
1
