Geofog kaf Technks Inc.
2741 River Road
Modesto,cafifamia 95351
(209)538-6424/F4X#538-5852
Work Plan
Soil and Groundwater Investigation
U.S. Can Company
35275 Highway 33
Vernalis, California
Project No. 397.2
August 9, 1996
1.0 SITE BACKGROUND
The U.S. Can Company is located at 35275 Highway 33 in Vernalis and was previously
operated as Hunter Can Company. Part of the transition agreement was for Hunter Can
Company to address the potential environmental issues associated with the operation of the
can manufacturing facility. The work performed to date is summarized below.
On May 9, 1995 ERM consultants performed a limited investigation in an effort to define the
lateral and vertical extent of a reported accidental surface release. Four hand auger borings
were advanced to a total depth of (10) feet. Detectable concentrations of volatile organic
compounds were found in soil samples collected from three of the four hand auger borings.
On November 29, 1995 WHF consultants continued the investigation by digging an
exploratory trench to a depth of(19) feet. A portable photo-Ionization detector was used to
screen soil contained in the backhoe bucket. Elevated readings above background were
observed to extend to at least the total depth of the exploratory excavation.
This information was reported in WHF's January 3, 1996 Preliminary Site Characterization
Report of Findings.
On June 17, 1996 Geological Technics Inc. was contracted to prepare the following work
plan which proposes to further investigate the extent of contamination at this site.
