Box 1810
Stockton, CA 95201
REVIEW OF 3RD Q DAR TER 2004 MONITORING REPORT,IL 4 RNEY LANE SA N'ITAR Y
LANDFILL, SANJOA QUIN COUNTY, FACILITNO. 5B390307001
We have reviewed the Harney Lane Sanitary Landfill, 3rd Quarter 2004 Groundwater and Surface
Water Monitoring Report(Report). Based on our review, we find the report complies with Waste
Discharge Requirements Order No. 96-139.
VOCs were detected in MW-2 as dichlorodifluoromethane, 1,2-dischloropropane, and tetrachloroethene.
We note your comments on further investigating the source of increased levels of constituents of concern
in MW-4 downgradient from the water treatment ponds at the migrant farm labor camp. During our last
inspection, we noted a groundwater well head at the migrant farm labor camp. I recommend that water
quality be gathered from this well, as well as drilling logs, screened interval and any other pertinent
information as part of your investigation. We appreciate your efforts in this regard.
We also note that chloride increases in groundwater are also occurring in upgradient well MW-1 and,
according to the County, unexplained levels in MW-4. We recommend that your investigation include
farm practices using herbicides, fertilizers, and pesticides on grape vineyards. Also, the County should
investigate the sources of irrigation wells that may be using groundwater from different aquifers that
may have naturally higher chloride than the aquifer monitored at Harney Lane. We look forward to
seeing the results of your research regarding this area of concern.
If you have any questions, please contact me at 916-464-4737 or schwabk@rb5s.swrcb.ca.gov.
KIM/A.
