APPENDIX C:
DATA USABILITY SUMMARY AND LABORATORY REPORTS
C.1 LABORATORY DATA USABILITY SUMMARY
Introduction
On behalf of Chevron Environmental Management Company, Science Applications International
Corporation(SAIC)has performed this evaluation of the laboratory analytical data in order to determine
their usability for the soil and groundwater investigation at the Vernalis Pump Station site in Vernalis,
San Joaquin County, California(the site). SAIC performed this investigation to delineate the extent of
affected soil and groundwater.
SAIC performed the data evaluation in general conformance to the requirements of project objectives
specified in the following documents:
• Work Plan for Additional Soil Borings and Installation of Monitoring Wells, Vernalis Pump
Station,June 2004;
• Quality Assurance& Quality Control:Sample Collection, Handling, and Analysis Guidelines;
ChevronTexaco Historical Pipeline Portfolio Sites, California,November 2004;
• SAIC Technical Procedure TP-DM-300-7,Data Validation; and
• SAIC Technical Procedure TP-DM-300-14,Evaluation of Field and Analytical Data.
Intended Uses of the Data
Laboratory data are being used for the following purposes:
• To delineate the extent of affected soil at the site;
• To evaluate the threat posed by the site to human health and the environment; and
• To evaluate various remedial alternatives.
For contaminant delineation decision-making, soil and groundwater laboratory analytical results are
compared to"action levels,"or levels above which further evaluation is appropriate(see Section 2.5 for
more details regarding action levels).
Summary of Field Activities
Laboratory results were generated during the investigation from May 16 through 24, 2005,totaling 18 soil
samples, five grab groundwater samples, and six field quality control samples. All samples were
submitted to Lancaster Laboratories(Lancaster)in Lancaster,Pennsylvania(California State-certified
laboratory,ELAP#2116)under SAIC chain-of-custody protocol. Analyses requested for soil samples
included the following constituents of concern(COC):
• Benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene,and total xylenes(BTEX)using U.S.EPA Method 826013;
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as crude oil(TPHc; C10—C36)using EPA Method 8015
Modified;and
• Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)using EPA Method 8270C with selective ion
monitoring(SIM).
Analyses requested for groundwater samples included the following COC:
• BTEX by EPA Method 826013;
• TPH quantified as gasoline(TPHg) (C6—Clo)by EPA Method 8015 Modified;
C-1 From Science to Solutions-
