The site consists of two separate properties: Bellini (formerly
known as Roberts) and the Arcos property. Bellini is the northern triangular shape portion, covering
5.73 acres and is generally vacant at this time. The Arcos site, adjacent to the south, is used as a storage
facility for miscellaneous materials and equipment. The Arcos site also contains a residence and an
office. The Vernalis site is located in a rural and light-industrial area.
The purpose of the investigation was to characterize subsurface soils and groundwater in the vicinity of
the former OVP pump station and pipeline right-of-way alignment. The report describes the installation
of soil borings and collection of samples for laboratory analysis to provide an evaluation of the extent of
total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH)-impacted soil and groundwater. Regional Board staff approved the
workplan 9 July 2004. Due to site access concerns, only a portion of the original workplan scope of
work was completed during the current investigation.
Six of ten soil borings and three of five monitoring wells originally proposed were completed. None of
the five step-out contingency borings were completed. According to the analytical results, it appears the
lateral extent of impacted groundwater was not delineated downgradient (east-northeast) of the site.
TPH as diesel (TPH-d)concentrations of 560 micrograms per liter(µg/L) and 660 µg/L in grab
groundwater was reported in downgradient borings SB-23 and 24, respectively.
Review of the data indicates that the remainder of the scope of work outlined in the July 2004 workplan
should be completed as proposed with one exception: groundwater sampling and monitoring(both Arcos
and Bellini site wells) should be implemented soon. Results of sampling may provide additional
information regarding consideration of the step-out contingency boring locations.
California Environmental Protection Agency
Qi Recycled Paper
