performed using a PID to detect the potential presence of VOCs in the headspace above the soil
samples selected for field screening.
On recovering a sample from the split-spoon system, selected soil samples will be
prepared for transport to the analytical laboratory. The ends of the sample sleeves will be covered
with Teflon° end patches and sealed with airtight plastic caps. The sample tubes will be labeled
with the project name, project number, boring number, sample depth, the date/time of sampling,
and the sampler's initials. The sample tubes will be placed into plastic bags and stored in an
insulated ice chest containing crushed ice for transport to the laboratory. Chain-of-custody
documentation will be completed and will accompany the soil samples to the analytical laboratory.
Recovered soil samples will be examined for soil classification and will be
described on detailed boring logs in general conformance with the Unified Soil Classification
System, as described in the American Society for Testing and Materials Standard D 2488-90.
Additional lithologic descriptions, headspace test results, and other drilling information (e.g., blow
counts per foot and sample recovery) will be recorded on the boring logs. An example of the type
of boring log that will be used during this investigation is provided in Appendix A.
Quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) samples, duplicate soil samples and
field blanks will also be obtained for laboratory analyses. Duplicate soil samples will be
obtained at the rate of 5% of the total soil samples obtained for laboratory analyses. Field blanks
will be collected daily.
On completion of the drilling, the borings will be backfilled to grade with a
cement-bentonite grout. The grout will be placed into the borings using tremie methods. All
work will be performed in accordance with SJC-EHD permit requirements and their inspections.
Preliminary Site Investigation Work Plan-Final July 9, 1998
Roberts Property(Former Vernalis Pump Station)
Vernalis,California
10
