GEOMATRIX
Based on the limited areal extent of the separate-phase petroleum, the low concentrations of
volatile petroleum hydrocarbon constituents, and the 30 feet of soil between the separate-phase
petroleum and the ground surface, chemicals volatilizing from the separate-phase petroleum are
not considered to be a significant source of exposure at the site. Therefore, the separate-phase
petroleum at depth is unlikely to pose an unacceptable risk to human health under an industrial
scenario.
6.0 RECOMMENDATION
Site data indicate that the residual petroleum present in the subsurface is not significantly
impacting the beneficial use of groundwater(i.e.,groundwater constituents were not detected
above WQOs). Therefore, according to the Consistent Technical Approach, the site would be
classified as a"Soil Case", and site conditions would be evaluated by the local agency (in this
case the SJC-EHD),which would include an evaluation of potential health risks associated with
the residual petroleum in soil. Site data indicate that the residual petroleum in the soil
(including the separate-phase petroleum) does not present an unacceptable risk to human
health. Site data also indicate that no further site investigation activities are required at this
time. However, due to the presence of separate-phase petroleum collocated with groundwater
at the site, site conditions should be presented to RWQCB for their evaluation.
4\sf31deptdata\Doc Safe15000s\SoI IVS1 HRA Rpt.dac 13
