Human Health Screening Evaluation
Former Vernalis Pump Station September 2,2010
8. ECOLOGICAL SCREENING EVALUATION
SAIC-Benham queried the California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB), maintained by the
California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), to search for threatened or endangered species
in the vicinity of the site. The CNDDB report identified six threatened or endangered species in
the surrounding site vicinity: the riparian brush rabbit, riparian(San Joaquin Valley) wood rat,
San Joaquin kit fox, Swainson's hawk, western yellow-billed cuckoo, and the delta button-celery
(DFG, 2010). The closest sighting was approximately 2 miles from the site. Therefore, this
assessment indicates that threatened, endangered, or sensitive species do not appear to exist
within 1 mile of the site. The database records from this CNDDB query are included as
Appendix D.
9. RECOMMENDATIONS
Potential on-site residential cancer risk is equivalent to the de minimis level of 1E-06, and non-
cancer health hazards are well below the de minimis level. The results of this HHSE indicate that
exposure to chemicals present in soil at the site should not result in unacceptable health risks for
an adult or child on-site resident. The ecological screening evaluation indicates that threatened
species do not appear to be present at the site. Therefore, no remedial action is necessary at the
site to protect human or ecological health, and a risk management decision of no further action
required can be made for on-site affected soils potentially related to the former OVP pump
station facilities.
10.
