CHEVRON RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY COMPANY
ANALYTICAL SCIENCES UNIT PROJECT SUMMARY
Project No. 1998.0138 Requested by D. L. Lapporte
Date Initiated 10129198 Location Chevron Pipe Line Co.
Date Completed l 1118198 4000 Executive Parkway
CRTC Charge Code YWTT107094 San Ramon,CA 94583
Phone 842-5718
i
Project Description. Analyze a hydrocarbon sample labeled MWZ=SP from Chevron Pipe Line's Vernalis
pump station. Identify the mature of the product. A water sample, MW/Y-SP-W, was provided for backup but
not analyzed.
'Li2"f5 %-•-.air 71t..' -I
f•s
r
Results: Sample MWXSP is an evaporated crude oil. The chromatogram is typical of many California
San Joaquin Valley crudes in that it has no apparent normal paraffins, several distinct isoprenoid
paraffins, and a concentration of steraneltriterpane biomarker peaks in the C27-C34 region.
The chromatogram shows no evidence for the presence of any diesel fuel or lube oil in the sample. if
small amounts of these products were present they could not easily be distinguished from the crude.
Analytical Approach: The sample was analyzed by gas chromatography using a flame ionization
detector to determine the hydrocarbon composition.
Analyzed by: N.
