11. S Can Conimmy
35275 Hwy. 33, Vernalis, Califoriji'z January .3, 1996
Preliminary Site Charaelerization Report of Findings Page: 4
axial portions of the trough, in the toe areas of the: fans, throughout much of this time period.
Coarser grained sediments of the upper portions of the fans occasionally prograded over the axial
area of the trough in response to major climatic ch=anges in the Sierras, This has resulted in a
predominance of fine grained silts and clays in the subsurface of the area.
5.0 Hydrology
California and Federal Governments have mandated that virtually all groundwater is beneficial for
current or inure use unless it can be demonstrated that no beneficial use is known.
This aquifer is considered to bP of beneficial use and as a r- cult, must be protected from
contamination. Those identified uses include agriculture and industrial, as well as potential use
for animal or human consumption.
6.0 Conclusions
Soil contamination was idem-LEed in thL subsu a.-.e imn3ediMâIy aidi scent to the main manufacturing
building. The removed waste pit contents also. had detections oC contanvnation. It is suspected that -
groundwater has been impact .d at this site.
7.0 Recommendations
WHF, Inc., recommends that a continued study to be done in order to investigate the lateral and
vertical extent of the soil plume and the possibility for first encountered groundwater inypact. It is
recoui neded that five (5) soil borings, with appropriate sar11phng, be conducted to an approximate
depth of 30-40 feet. One of the five boririgs shOuld be complzted as a 4" cased monitoring well to
approximately 50 feet 1).g.l.
Tile approximate location tb.-these should b3 as full(;ws.
1) Two {2)vertical borif;vis, approximately ten feet away froni the concrete support pillars in the
direction parallel to the building(--north and south perimeter).
2) Two (2) angled boy cgs; appresxiriatel-y 25 degrees fi-om vertical, directly adjacent to the
concrete support pilla3-s. Thusc boriiigs will be angled at 25 degrees, from vertical,
under the foundation of the building.
