Soil and Groundwater Investigation Report and
Second Quarter 2005 Monitoring and Sampling,US Can-Welty Road October 2005
is presented on Figures 5 and 6. Copies of the soil and groundwater chemical analytical reports with
chain-of-custody documentation are included in Appendix F.
5.2.3 Investigation-Derived Waste
Soil cuttings were stored in properly labeled 55-gallon,DOT-rated drums and stored at the site pending
disposal by CEMC. The drums were removed on May 4,2005 and transported from the site by Sturgeon
& Sons,to the Altamont Landfill in Livermore, California.
6. WELL SEARCH RESULTS
In April 2004, SAIC conducted a search of DWR files to identify water supply wells within a 2,000-foot
radius of the site. The water supply well search covered portions of Township 3-South;Range 4-East;
sections 34 and 35. Three domestic wells (Figure 1, ID# 1,#2,#4) identified were located within the
2,000-foot radius; two of the domestic wells appear to be located up gradient of the former pipeline
ROW, and one is located cross gradient to the inferred northeasterly groundwater flow direction. The
well completion reports indicate the domestic wells were constructed with a minimum sanitary seal of 20
feet bgs. However, the well completion report for domestic well ID#4 did not state a well seal depth.
Municipal or agricultural water supply wells were not formally identified during the April 2004 DWR
search, yet, two wells (ID#5 and#6)were described as public wells and are located at the subject site.
Both wells are sealed at 150 and 200 feet bgs, respectively. SAIC identified six monitoring wells, one
groundwater extraction well, and one industrial well located within the 2000-foot radius. Six monitoring
wells, one groundwater extraction well and one industrial well are located down gradient and cross
gradient from the area of concern. The DWR water supply wells identified are presented on Figure 1 and
summarized in Table 5.
7. QUALITY ASSURANCE/QUALITY CONTROL
An equipment rinsate sample(QA-R)was collected from a clean, disposable bailer, and accompanied the
samples in shipment to the laboratory, using laboratory-provided deionized water. The equipment blank
sample was analyzed for BTEX,MTBE, TPHg, TPHd, and PAHs. All tested constituents were not
detected with the exception of phenanthrene, which was detected at the laboratory detection limit of 0.01
gg/L. One trip blank sample(QA-T) accompanied the site samples in each shipment to the laboratory.
The trip blank samples did not exhibit concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHg,BTEX, or
MTBE)at or above the laboratory detection limits. Detailed descriptions and explanations are
documented in the laboratory report included in Appendix F.
8. WELL SURVEY
On April 5,2005,Morrow Surveying of West Sacramento, California(License#LS4650)surveyed all
site monitoring wells. All wells were surveyed for vertical MSL elevations as well as for horizontal
latitude and longitude coordinates, using APM GPS equipment. Well surveying and groundwater
elevation data are presented in Table 6. Surveyor report is included in Appendix G.
9. WELL DEVELOPMENT
On April 5,2005 monitoring well MW-5 was developed. During the development of well MW-5, SAIC
purged 10 well casing volumes of groundwater using a 2 inch-diameter disposable polyethylene bailer.
During the purge process water-quality parameters(pH, specific conductance, and temperature)were
recorded. Field data sheets are included in Appendix H.
7 From Science to Solutions-
