with homes further to the west. There is a walnut orchard just east of Pock Lane
to the east and a community center north of the site.
VEGETATION: Habitats in the site are highly disturbed from intensive farming for
decades and periodic disking and tilling of portions of the site for several years
(see photographs in Attachment C). The fields north and south of Duck Creek
had been disked within a month or two of the surveys.
The California annual grassland series (Sawyer and Keeler -Wolf, 1995) best
describes the vegetation in the site. Wild oats (Avena sp.) is the dominant grass
in the site, with lesser amounts of ripgut brome (Bromus diandrus) and perennial
ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Other grassland species such as Russian thistle
(Salsola tragus), black mustard (Brassica nigra), field bindweed (Convolvulus
arvensis), alkali mallow (Malvella leprosa), and filaree (Erodium botrys) are
intermixed with the grasses. Table 1 is a list of plant species observed in the site.
Vegetation within and along the banks of Duck Creek include common
hydrophytic species such as cattails (Typha sp.), tall flat sedge (Cyperus
eragrostis), golden crown grass (Paspalum dilatatum), Baltic rush (Juncus
balticus), and curly dock (Rumex crispus).
There is a relatively large ornamental pine (Pinus sp.) and a few small nut trees
just north of Duck Creek. Other trees in the site include a row of large ornamental
trees in the northwest part of the site along Loomis Road; it is unclear if these
trees fall within the site boundary or are just off-site. Similarly, there are a few
trees along the road shoulder of Pock Lane on the east edge of the site and it is
unclear if these trees are within the site boundary. Trees along Pock Lane
include small almonds, valley oaks (Quercus lobata), and a few ornamental
species. Lastly, there are several trees associated with the community center just
north of the site and within residential parcels adjacent to and in close proximity
to the site. No blue elderberry (Sambucus nigra ssp. caerulea) shrubs were
observed in or adjacent to the site.
3009 Pock Lane: Biology 7 November 24, 2021
