Box 690757
Stockton, CA 95269
WORK PLAN APPROVAL, FORMER KARLSON TRUCKING, MANTECA,
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
We have reviewed Geo-Phase Environmental's 2 March 2001 Report, Site Characterization-Third Event
for the former Karlson Trucking(KT) site in Manteca. The report presents the results of soil and
groundwater sampling at two locations downgradient of monitoring well (MW) 6 to determine the extent
of total petroleum hydrocarbons as (TPHd)pollution in groundwater beneath the site. Our comments on
the site characterization report are presented below.
The report shows that soil contained nondetectable (ND) levels of TPHd at the two sample locations,
groundwater at 13, 17, and 21 feet below ground surface contained TPHd at 330,ND, and 60 µg/1,
respectively, in SB-13; and 597, 277, and ND gg/l, respectively, in SB-14. The report concludes that the
TPHd in groundwater appeared to be non-petroleum organic materials. The report recommends no
additional characterization at the site, performing a risk assessment, and conducting groundwater
sampling.
We concur with the report's findings and recommendations. In addition to the tasks proposed,we
request that KT collect all the necessary information specified in Appendix B [No Further Action(NFA)
Requests] of the Tri-Regional Board Staff Recommendations for Preliminary Investigation and
Evaluation of Underground Tank Sites in anticipation of submitting a NFA request for the site. By
8 June 2001,please submit a schedule to complete the risk assessment, conduct groundwater sampling,
and prepare a NFA request in accordance with Appendix B.
If you have any questions, you may call me at (916) 255-3398 or e-mail at isorenp@rb5s.swrcb.ca.gov.
LtvjX
*)y- LIP
S.
