Work Plan- Site Characterization II Page 7
Former Karlson Trucking Facility
Project No. 191.2
December 6, 1999
reading will be recorded to an accuracy of 0.01 foot. Floating product and its
thickness will also be noted if present. As each well is opened, and prior to
taking the depth to groundwater measurement, a PID will be used to screen
for VOC's in the head space of the well.
Stagnant water in the well casing will be purged using a low flow volume
purge pump. The rate of well purging will be noted and groundwater
parameters measured, i.e., temperature, conductivity and pH, at the
initiation of pumping and after purging each well volume to determine if
water representative of formation is entering the well. It will be assumed
that representative water is entering the well if the measured groundwater
parameters are within 10% of each other for three consecutive parameter
measurements. At a minimum, three well volumes will be pumped from each
well.
Before a sample is collected, the well's water level will be allowed to recharge
to at least 80% of it's initial level. All water removed from the monitoring
well and not used as a sample, will be placed in 55 gallon DOT (Department
of Transportation 17-H) approved containers, properly labeled, and
temporally stored on-site until arrangements can be made for its proper
disposal.
A clean stainless steel bailer will be used to collect each groundwater sample.
Bailer cleanliness will be verified by collecting a bailer blank (pouring
distilled water through the bailer and collecting it in a VOA vial) prior to
collecting the analytical sample. Disposable gloves will be worn by the
sampling technician while collecting all samples. The gloves will be changed
between the collection of each sample to reduce the potential for cross-
contamination.
Water samples will be transferred from the bailer into unpreserved 1 liter
amber glass bottles. Extreme care will be exercised during the collection of
each sample to prevent agitation of the water contained in the bailer. All
samples will be checked for head space bubbles, labeled, inserted into foam
holders and placed in an ice chest cooled to 4°C for transport to the
laboratory.
A chain of custody document, listing all samples collected and their intended
analyses, will accompany the samples from field to the laboratory, thereby
providing a means to track their movement and insure their integrity.
Samples will be shipped to Sherwood Labs (DHS# 1400), of Hilmar,
California, for analysis.
2937 Veneman Avenue,Suite B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
