31 March 2008
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0500
Page 2 of 10
stream. Ground water remediation should be conducted concurrently with SVE to facilitate
remediation of the smear zone and upper water table.
1.2. SHALLOW GROUND WATER REMEDIATION ALTERNATIVES
As a result of the IAS pilot test,a significant reduction of the shallow dissolved hydrocarbons(total
petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline TPH-g and volatile organic compounds [VOCs]:
Benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene,and total xylenes[BTEX]and 1,2-dichloroethane[1,2-DCA])near
the former UST dispenser island has been observed and should be anticipated at other locations on
the site. The greatest hydrocarbon and fuel additive impact to the water table occurs in the area of
the former dispenser area and the now is centered within the on-site building, at wells MW-7 and
MW-8. Additional in-situ air sparging wells should be installed near wells MW-7 and MW-8, and
within the building to remediate the impact to the ground water table,the upper most hydrogeologic
unit. The proposed IAS and SVE wells should have the same construction with the current
remediation well network. Additional remediation will likely be required to mitigated the deep
dissolved fuel additive 1,2-DCA at the site; with the submittal of a separate work plan the deep
ground water remediation feasibility will be conducted simultaneously with the enhanced SVE/IAS
remediation.
1.3. REMEDIATION SCOPE OF WORK
The scope of work includes the installation of additional remediation wells,installation of additional
piping connections/control valves to the remediation wells, operation and maintenance of a soil
vapor extraction system for the treatment of the vadose zone contamination,both hydrocarbons and
additives.
2.0. SCOPE OF WORK
The proposed scope of work will include the following tasks:
• Pre-field work activities;
• Drilling and Soil sample collection;
• Installation of remediation wells (IAS well and SVE wells);
• Installation of SVE and IAS piping network into the newly installed wells;
• SVE/IAS system start-up period (which includes wells);
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
