COMPANY I
STOCKTON, CA
Ev aluated by: Richard Burzinski Date: January 2009
TASK NAME
GROUNDWATER SAMPLING — DIRECT PUSH DRILLING
TASK DESCRIPTION CHEMICAL EXPOSURE HAZARDS
Groundwater grab samples may be collected from selected soil borings using small-diameter
bailers or a peristaltic pump. Grab samples may be collected from within the annular space of
the soil sampling rods or collected from open boreholes or from temporary well casings installed
in the borings. The groundwater grab samples will be labeled, placed in an insulated container
cooled with ice, and transported under chain-of-custody documentation to a California-certified
laboratory.
Petroleum hydrocarbons (dermal)
BTEX (dermal
MTBE (dermal)
Fuel Oxygenates (dermal)
PPE OTHER SAFETY EQUIPMENT PHYSICAL HAZARDS
Level D Ensemble (SH&E 113)
Hard hat
Safety glasses
Traffic safety vest (to maintain
visibility)
Short/long- sleeved shirt
Full-length pants
Safety-toe boots
Nitrile gloves
First aid kit (located in vehicle)
Fire extinguisher (located in vehicle)
Portable eyewash station (located in
vehicle)
•
Slips, trips, falls, and protruding objects
Hazardous noise environments
Drill rig hazards
Drum handling
Traffic safety
APPLICABLE OPERATIONAL SAFETY PROCEDURES ADDITIONAL SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Slips, Trips, Falls, and Protruding Objects (Section 6.1)
Hazardous Noise Environments (Section 6.2)
SH&E 403, Drilling (Attachment B)
SH&E 517, Traffic Safety (Attachment B)
Evaluate surrounding work area for additional hazards that may be
present.
Establish responsibilities and roles of all personnel involved.
Document roles/responsibilities in log book.
MONITORING PROCEDURES
The monitoring procedures shown below will be followed during all groundwater sampling activities.
Completed boreholes will be allowed to ventilate for a minimum of 5 minutes, then monitored for VOC concentration using a PID. A
reading in excess of 100 ppm will require additional ventilation, followed by re-monitoring. If an acceptable VOC concentration in the
breathing zone area cannot be reached within 30 minutes, seal the borehole and contact the SH&EP for guidance.
