AdvancedGeo
09 January 2019 Environmental
AGE Project No. 99-0559 G
3.0. FIELD PROCEDURES
All field procedures will be overseen by an AGE representative working under the
supervision of a California Professional Geologist. Procedures for advancing soil
borings, installation of soil vapor wells, collection and analysis of soil and soil vapor
samples, boring abandonment, equipment decontamination and sample handling are
presented below.
3.1. SOIL BORING ADVANCEMENT
A total of seven (7) shallow soil borings for soil sampling will be advanced using a truck-
mounted or van-mounted Geoprobe® 5400 direct-push probing unit equipped with 1.25-
inch diameter probing rods. The probe rigs advance soil borings using a hydraulic
hammer to drive sampling tools to specified depths. Borings for soil sampling will be
advanced to total depths of 10 feet bsg.
A total of two (2) pilot soil borings for the installation of soil vapor wells will be advanced
to total depths of 6.5 feet bsg using a 4-inch diameter hand auger.
3.2. SOIL SAMPLING
Soil samples will be collected for laboratory analysis from the proposed onsite soil
borings. Discrete soil samples will be collected at 5 and 10 feet bsg from each boring
using a 1.45-inch diameter Geoprobe soil sampling assembly loaded with a two-foot
acetate liner. Upon sample retrieval, a selected portion of the liner will be separated and
covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape.
Appropriately sealed and labeled samples will be placed in a chilled container under ice
and transported under chain-of-custody procedure to a ELAP-certified laboratory.
Samples will be analyzed for the constituents listed in Section 2.2. Each sample will be
labeled with boring designation, depth, time, date and sampler's initials. Soils
encountered in the borings will be visually classified by AGE personnel in accordance
with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Additionally, soil samples will be
field-screened for presence of volatile organic compounds using an organic vapor meter
(OVM), equipped with photo-ionization detector (PID) pre-calibrated to isobutylene.
3.3. SOIL-VAPOR WELL INSTALLATION
AGE proposes to advance a total of two (2) pilot soil borings to 6.5 feet bsg for
installation of depth discrete soil-vapor wells to evaluate the potential threat of vapor
intrusion, off-site to the north and south. Proposed soil borings will be advanced using a
4-inch diameter hand auger.
