WATERLOO FOOD AND FUEL UST REMOVAL
PAGE 3
Soil analytical results are summarized in Tables 1 and 2. Laboratory analytical reports and chain-of-
custody documents are attached to this report.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Soil analytical results indicate that the soil in the vicinity of the gasoline USTs and dispenser islands
has been impacted with gasoline constituents, especially the north end of the USTs and the east-west
run of the product line trench. Soil samples collected from below the gasoline USTs contained TPHg
concentrations ranging from below the detection limit(ND) to 2400 milligrams per kilogram(mg/kg),
benzene concentrations ranging from ND to less than 1200 micrograms per kilogram(ug/kg), MTBE
concentrations ranging from 12 to 11000 ug/kg. The UST samples also contained concentrations of
other BTEX compounds ranging from ND to 120000 ug/kg, and other oxygenates ranging from ND
to less than 50000 ug/kg. Total lead concentrations in the gasoline UST samples ranged from 2.9
to 17 mg/kg_ Soil samples collected from the gasoline UST excavation stockpiles contained TPHg
concentrations ranging from ND to 3.7 mg/kg, benzene concentrations ranging from ND to 6.6
ug/kg,MTBE concentrations ranging from 89 to 480 ug/kg. The gasoline UST soil stockpile samples
also contained concentrations of other BTEX compounds ranging from ND to 200 ug/kg, and total
lead concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 7.6 mg/k&
Soil samples collected from below the product lines contained TPHg concentrations ranging from ND
to 2800 mg/kg, benzene concentrations ranging from ND to less than 15000 ug/kg, MTBE
concentrations ranging from 12 to 260000 ug/kg. The product line samples also contained
concentrations of other BTEX compounds ranging from ND to 310000 ug/kg, and other oxygenates
ranging from ND to less than 17000 ug/kg.
The soil sample (T-4) collected from below the waste oil UST contained an MTBE concentration of
25 ug/kg and an O&G concentration of 1300 mg/kg. MTBE concentrations ranging from 12 to
11000 ug/kg. The UST samples also contained concentrations of other BTEX compounds ranging
from ND to 120000 ug/kg, other oxygenates ranging from ND to less than 50000 ug/kg, and LUFT
metal concentrations ranging from 5.1 to 54 mg/kg. No TPHd or SVOCs were detected in soil
sample T-4. The soil sample(SP-5) collected from the waste oil UST excavation stockpile contained
a toluene concentration.of 6.9 ug/kg, an MTBE concentration of 30 ug/kg, an O&G concentration
of 100 mg/kg, and LUFT metal concentrations ranging from 36 to 290 mg/kg. The waste oil UST
soil stockpile samples also contained concentrations of other BTEX compounds ranging from ND
to 200 ug/kg, and total lead concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 7.6 mg/kg. No TPHd or SVOCs
were detected in soil sample SP-5.
Given the quantity of petroleum hydrocarbons detected in soil and groundwater samples, it is
recommended that a workplan be developed for a preliminary site investigation to determine the
nature and extent of petroleum hydrocarbons in the local soil and groundwater environments. The
workplan should generally include provisions for:
