Periodically IT Corporation would vacuum product from
these excavations and store the waste material in a tanker truck for
subsequent disposal. Product seepage and recovery from these trenches was
very small during the week of March 10, and almost nil during the first two
days of the week of March 17. Less than 380 barrels of skimmed product and
wastewater were collected by IT Corporation over the 4 week cleanup period.
Hence, emergency clean-up operations were terminated and most of the
excavations backfilled during the following week.
3.3 Air Sampling
In response to reports of eye irritation and breathing problems by a
number of nearby residents, an air sampling program was implemented on
Monday, March 3, 1986. The sampling was conducted by IT Corporation with
guidance from MARK. Samples were taken at seven stationary locations and
one , mobile sampler at three different times of the day (morning, early
afternoon, evening) for two consecutive days. Four of the sampling
locations were at the landfill and the other three were at the Whiskey
Slough Marina (See Drawing 6).
Sample locations at the landfill were selected so as to obtain upwind
and downwind air quality data. Two of the locations were placed on the
perimeter of the landfill closest to the Marina area to provide adequate
sampling of air moving towards the Marina.
Samples were collected for periods ranging up to 5 hours.
