The only well showing detectable fuel hydrocarbon concentrations is M-9.
It should be noted that free product was visually detected in wells
"Old" 1, M-1, M-2 and M-9, yet the groundwater sample analyses detected
hydrocarbons in M-9 only. One possible explanation for this discrepancy is
that the wells are of inappropriate design and/or construction and product
from surface waters collected in the wells during periods of site flooding.
Fuel product was therefore detected in a number of wells prior to purging.
After purging product would have been detected in only those wells which
were in contact with groundwater containing product.
Another possible explanation is that the fuel products are
preferentially retarded by the soils at the site, and that after purging
groundwater was capable of moving into the well but not the product. This
phenomenon has been observed at other sites where the soils have a
preferential "wetting" to water over fuel hydrocarbons.
Table 4.4: Surface Water Sample Analyses
Station Date
Total Fuel
Hydrocarbons Benzene Toluene Xylene
(mg/1) (mg/1) (mg/1) (mg/1)
Marina Surface (MS-1) 3/3/86 ND ND ND ND
Marine Deep (MV-1) 3/3/86 ND ND ND ND
Landfill Surface (LS-1) 3/3/86 ND ND ND ND
Landfill Deep (LV-1) 3/3/86 ND ND ND ND
Marina Surface (MS-2) 3/3/86 ND ND ND ND
Marina Deep (MV-2) 3/3/86 ND ND ND ND
Marina Surface (WS 0) 3/8/86 ND ND ND ND
Detection Limits 10 0.5 0.5 1.0
ND = Not Detected
4-4
