A.1.4 Shipment and Chain-of-Custody
For shipment, samples will be packed with reusable refrigerant materials
in insulated containers at 4 degrees centigrade, and transported immediately
to the laboratory. Storage at the laboratory should be refrigerated and in
absence of light except those soil samples to be frozen. The metal sample
liners used reduce exposure to sunlight. Sample receipt at the laboratory
should be at the end of the work shift of the day of collection.
We will conduct the soil sampling under chain-of-custody procedures as
follows:
Sample Custody
A sample is under custody if:
it is in the sampler's actual possession; or
it is in the sampler's view, after being in his/her physical
possession; or
it was in the sampler's physical possession and then he/she
locked it up to prevent tampering; or
it is in a designated and identified secured area.
Field Custody Considerations
As few people as possible will handle the samples.
The field sampler is personally responsible for the care and
custody of the samples until they are transferred or properly
dispatched to the analytical laboratory.
Transfer of Custody and Shipment
Samples will be accompanied by the Chain-of-Custody Record.
When transferring the possession of samples, the individuals
relinquishing and receiving will sign, date, and note the time
