We do
understand the Operator would like to reduce their purge time by inserting polyethylene tubes inside the existing
PVC pipes. Based on Calrecycle's landfill gas monitoring procedures, we have recommended against purging
the gas probes and have recommended readings once steady state has been achieved. Purging might actually
defeat the purpose of true gas monitoring since by purging, gas that might have had the potential to migrate and
accumulate within the probes will be purged. Our experience with polyethylene tubing is that they become brittle
and break easily and there may not be a way to tell the condition of such plastic tubing once installed within the
PVC. However, if the operator wants to install the plastic tubing, they should provide assurance that installing the
plastic tubing will not defeat the purpose of gas monitoring and that it will not compromise the integrity of
monitoring.
Mike please address the comments so that we can get back to Calrecycle. Thanks Robert
-)1-7/1012
