APPENDIX E
SITE RECONNAISSANCE INTERVIEW AND OBSERVATIONS REPORT
Bechtel Environmental, Inc.
P.O. Box 193965
San Francisco, CA 94119-3965
OBSERVATIONS MADE BY: Peter Mann and Greg Carroll DATE: March 22, 1993
FACILITY REPRESENTATIVE(S) and TITLE(S): Rod Gonzalez (Supervisor), Luigi
Trinchera (Research Manager), Tom Thompson (Inspector), and Patrick Lam (Plant Manager)
SITE: California Cedar Products Company
EPA ID: CAD 009157876
A site reconnaissance was conducted at the California Cedar Products Company (Cal Cedar) site
on Monday, March 22, 1993. The weather was clear and sunny and the temperature was
approximately 68°F. The Bechtel team, Peter Mann and Greg Carroll, conducted the site
reconnaissance with Rod Gonzalez at Cal Cedar to gather information on the site location and size,
history, processes used, and any hazardous waste generated, treated, stored or disposed of on site.
The Bechtel team was provided with a packet of information prepared in response to Bechtel's
letter dated November 11, 1992. The reconnaissance included a site tour during which
photographs were taken.
The following information was obtained during the site reconnaissance:
Cal Cedar has been in operation since 1919 and is located at 1340 West Washington St., Stockton,
Calif. The company was owned by W.B. Therman until 1927 when the Berolzheimer family
purchased Cal Cedar. Before 1919, the site was used by a small milling company. It is not
known if hazardous substances were generated on site.
The site is entirely fenced and monitored by an electronic surveillance system. The site occupies
approximately 47 acres and is bounded by McCormick and Baxter to the north, Interstate 5 to the
east and south, and Washington Elementary School and residences to the west. There are no
residences on site. In addition, there are no daycare centers within 200 feet of the site boundary.
The site is approximately 75 percent paved. The 25 percent unpaved area is on the west side of the
site and will be used for future lumber storage sheds.
There are currently eight storage sheds, four slat warehouses, six kilns, a machine shop, a slat
factory, a sawdust bag house, a sawdust bin and storage shed, three paved parking lots, four office
areas and a hazardous substance storage area. Hazardous substances and waste are contained in
55-gallon drums.
Cal Cedar uses solvents, lubricants, and various petroleum products in its processes. Hazardous
substances and wastes are stored in 55-gallons drums along the southern boundary of property.
