LI
n
Work Plan for Sampling Fabrics Above the Landfill Liner
Module 3, North County Recycling Center and Sanitary Landfill
Wednesday, April 25, approximately 9:30 AM
o Solid Waste Engineers hydropunch through the operations layer to the above -liner fabrics
at four locations around the area where the sample will be taken (need water truck w/
hose).
- Sampled area = 4ftx6ft minimum
- Exposed area = 6ftx8ft minimum
- Dimensions at the top of the excavation, assuming 2:1 slopes and 2 feet soil
thickness= 10ftx12ft minimum.
- Dimension of staked area = 12ftx14ft minimum.
o SW Engineers install stakes in the holes, and string a line from stake to stake over the
sampling area. The string line will establish the control elevation, anticipated to be four
feet above the liner.
o North County staff removes soil no farther than three feet below the string lines, leaving
one -foot of soil above the liner. Removal is by square shovels. SW Engineers need not
be present.
Thursday April 26, 9:30 AM
Under the observation and direction of M. Carroll:
o Landfill staff removes the remaining one foot of operations soil using square shovels,
brooms, and/or other means as appropriate to expose the fabrics without damage.
o SW engineers mark the area from which the sample is to be taken.
o Landfill staff cut a panel of GCL from the roll on site to provide a minimum 6 -inch overlap
all sides (5ftx7ft minimum).
o SW Engineers and landfill staff take the samples. First the filter fabric is removed, then
the underlying drain net. SW Engineers photograph and document the condition of the
liner.
o GCL fabric is placed over the exposed liner and the area backfilled using the appropriate
equipment.
