October 26, 2011
Mr. Steve Dunn
Vice President
Commercial Pool Systems,
252 Appalachian Dr
Martinez, CA 94553-6206
W2,2rsin2P2 c—
Inc.
SENT VIA EMAIL: steve@commercialpooisystems.com
RE: AEGIS MODEL 3030AEC USED IN ADJACENT INSTALLATIONS
Letter of Approval
Dear Steve,
CPS -06
This letter approves the use of multiple Neptune Benson AEGIS 3030AEC suction outlet covers
located adjacent to each other when the specific limitations outlined below are followed.
1. Suction outlet covers were designed and tested to have all four edges supported.
When covers are used in adjacent installations, a beam is required to support the
adjacent edges that bridge the sump. For sump widths up to 24", a high-density
polyethylene beam measuring 4" wide and 2" deep may be used. This beam has a
moment of inertia of I=2.67 in A4 and a section modulus of 5=2.67 in A3. Using a
flexural strength of Fb=1400 psi, the beam has a moment capacity of M=3733 in -
lbs. For a simply supported beam spanning 24", the beam will support a point load
of 622 lbs which exceeds the required 600 Ib load.
2. Sumps that meet the depth criteria of 1.5 x pipe diameter may use any number of
covers in a linear arrangement and the total allowable flow rate is the sum of the
ASME A112.19.8 listed flow rate. For example, a single floor outlet is approved for
1432 gpm, so a pair of floor outlets is approved for 2864 gpm and three floor outlets
is approved for 4,296 gpm and so on. A single wall outlet is approved for 1120 gpm,
so a pair of wall outlets is approved for 2240 gpm and so on. In jurisdictions that
limit the flow-through velocity to 1.5 fps, a single outlet is approved for 600 gpm, so
a pair of outlets is approved for 1200 gpm and so.on.
3. These covers are tested and approved for use directly over pipes up to 10" diameter
without any sump. However, this assumes that the cover is approximately centered
over the pipe. If a pair of covers is placed directly over a pipe where the beam
crosses the pipe, the velocity through the cover will be higher in the vicinity of the
pipe. To equalize the flow through the perimeter of the pair of covers, it is
important to use a diffuser plate between the pipe and the covers. The diffuser
plate should be square or rectangular and measure at least 1.5 x pipe diameter in
the shortest dimension. For example, a 10" pipe requires a 15" square diffuser plate
located below the beam. The diffuser plate should be at least 1/2" thick high-density
polyethylene fastened with type 316 stainless steel anchors. The gap between the
pipe and the diffuser plate shall provide at least the same cross-sectional area as the
pipe itself.
"., . nn
140 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Suite 202 Solana Beach, California 92075-121, 11SA't)S58. 0;1001 "Fs 8.720.9001
- --
