SuPpi
Hazardous Materials Training For Compressed Carbon Dioxide
Last Date Created/Modified:August 25, 2021
Hazard Identification
Carbon dioxide is a gas under pressure that may explode if heated.
Potential Health Effects
Inhalation
Carbon dioxide may displace oxygen, cause rapid suffocation and may increase breathing and heart rate.
Hazards of Materials
Carbon dioxide may displace oxygen and cause rapid suffocation. Contact with skin may cause frostbite.
Emergency Response
Evacuate the surrounding areas. Keep unnecessary and unprotected personnel from entering. Avoid
breathing gas and provide adequate ventilation.
Accidental Release Measures
Steps to Be Taken if Material is Released/Spilled
Immediately contact emergency personnel for small or large spills.Avoid breathing gas. Stop leak if
without risk.
Inform the relevant authorities if the product has caused environmental pollution (sewers, waterways,
soil or air).
Methods for Safe Handling
Put on appropriate personal protective equipment. Do not puncture or incinerate container. Close
valve after each use and when empty. Protect cylinders from physical damage; do not drag, roll, slide or
drop. Use a suitable hand truck for cylinder movement. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
Eating, drinking and smoking should be prohibited in areas where this material is handled, stored and
processed.
Store away from direct sunlight in a dry, cool and well-ventilated area, away from incompatible
materials.
Cylinders should be stored upright, with valve protection cap in place, and firmly secured to prevent
falling or being knocked over.
pg. 1
