DEF Trans‐Loading SOP

Railcar Preparation and Transport Loading

Secure rail entrance by placing a “Blue Flag” between tracks to ensure that rail
authorities do not enter while offloading.
Ensure handbrake on railcar is engaged (one extra “click” on the handbrake wheel).
Prepare and put on the approved safety harness.
Climb the railcar ladder and secure the safety harness.
Vent railcar from top
a. Use proper tools to open manway or valves.
i. Lever valve is the preferred way to vent the railcar, upon which it
is not necessary to vent through the manway.
ii. Manway cover is the secondary option, which should be used in
place of the lever valve.
b. Open venting valve slowly to prevent possible pressure from escaping
quickly. Open only the smaller of the 2 valves.
Remove cap from bottom outlet port on railcar and hook up appropriate adapter for
offloading. There are two types of offloading ports. Select the proper adapter for each
port.
a. 4“ male Camlock. This connection requires a 4” x 3” female x male adapter
for hose hook up.
b. 5” threaded male. This connection requires a 5 inch threaded female rail
car fitting with a 45 degree elbow for hose hook up.
Hook up the DEF offloading hose to the connection on the outlet port of the railcar and
to the pump suction on the Trans Load trailer. Verify both connections
Locate the railcar unloading valve and read the instructions for operation, they are
written on the car. The release handle will either be on the under belly of the railcar or
on the side of the railcar.
Slowly open the unloading valve and check connections for leaks.
Check for the proper configuration of the valves on the Trans Load trailer.
Complete a final walk around, checking for any loose connections and to double check
that all items above have been completed. Once these items have been verified, start
the pump and start the Trans Load process.
Once the desired amount is delivered into the transport, close the inlet valve on the
Trans Load trailer and stop the pump.
Close the inlet valve on the Trans Load trailer. Open the air valve to push the residual in
the DEF offloading hose back into the railcar. While the air is on, close the valve on the
bottom of the railcar. Then shut off the air supply and discharge remaining air from the
offloading hose via the air relief valve.
