Appendix E: MEDICAL EMERGENCY
For the purpose of this plan, a medical emergency consists of an injury or illness that demands
more than basic first aid (i.e., a heart attack, seizure, broken bones, severe bleeding, etc.). This
section is not designed to provide medical advice or take the place of organized first aid. In the
event of a medical emergency take the following steps:
• Determine, if possible, the seriousness of the injury. If an ambulance or paramedic is
needed, call (911).
• Properly trained or certified employees may render first aid while awaiting the arrival of
emergency medical personnel.
• Remain calm; this will help you take appropriate actions.
NOTE: Only administer first aid if trained and in accordance with the level of training.
FIRST AID TIPS
Asses the scene for hazards, ensure personal safety, and eliminate any potential hazards that
threaten your safety or that of the victim.
Treat life-threatening conditions first—refer to the ABC's of CPR:
• Airway—is something blocking the passage of air?
• Breathing—is the victim breathing?
• Circulation—does the victim have a heartbeat or pulse?
Apply direct pressure to bleeding wounds to stop the flow of blood.
Keep the victim as comfortable as possible. This can usually be achieved by lying the victim down
and covering them if they indicate they are cold.
Do not move a victim unless it is absolutely necessary.
Do not give an unconscious or semi-conscious person anything to drink.
Do not let victims see their wounds.
Reassure victims, stay with them, and keep them comfortable.
Always remain calm.
Page 112
