Should the plug be moved lower or higher in the hole if it needs to be moved?
From: Michael Carroll [mai Ito: mcarroll@sjgov.org]
Sent: Monday, August 03, 2009 9:48 AM
To: Kevin Jorgensen II
Cc: 'Robert McClellon [EH]'; 'Peter Holland'; Joyesh Chandra
Subject: What -ifs in advance
Good morning Kevin,
I thought it would be useful to know EHDs position on two points that could come up in the LFG
perimeter migration monitoring well project. If the questions come up from the Contractor, you will
know what the answer from EHD will be.
I am doing what I can to ensure that contractor issues get taken care of quickly, trying to foresee what
may come up, get them answered in advance. Robert McClellon was kind enough to help with this.
The first question was related to the thickness of sand lenses lens or equivalent high -permeability
stratum (if encountered) and the movement of the bentonite plug to avoid them. If a sand stratum is 20
feet thick or less, then we will move the plug. If the sand lenses is greater than 20 feet thick, we will
leave it at the design depth.
The second question related to construction of the wells in an open hole, which might be the case with
an the air -rotary rig. Of concern to EHD was the potential for sloughing of soil into the hole overnight.
Robert said that an acceptable way to address this concern would be to measure distance at the end of
the day to whatever is left in the hole, and re -measure at the start of the next day. EHD is not requiring
that the well be completed once construction starts.
I hope this is useful.
And of course, our friends from Vector know that gany decision or directive to the contractor comes from
you or your deputy.
Regards,
8/3/2009
