These drugs appear <br />on the EPA's "U list." These seven chemotherapy drugs and associated federal hazardous waste <br />codes are provided below. These drugs will be treated as hazardous waste in any amount. <br />✓ Chlorambucil (Leukeran@) <br />U035 <br />✓ Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan® or Neosar®) <br />U058 <br />✓ Daunomycin (Melphalan® or Alkeran®) <br />U059 <br />✓ Mitomycin (Mitomycin CO or Mutamycin@) <br />U010 <br />✓ Melphalan (Alkeran@) <br />U150 <br />✓ Streptozotocin (Zanosar@) <br />0206 <br />✓ Uracil Mustard (Uramustine@) <br />U236 <br />3. Hazardous waste must be inventoried on the Chemo Waste Log and then placed in containers labeled <br />"Hazardous waste". <br />4. Once the hazardous waste has been placed in the proper container, the inventory log will be given to <br />the Risk Manager, who will direct transport of the waste to the appropriate site for final disposition. <br />PROCEDURE FOR TRACE CHEMOTHERAPY CONTAINMENT IN PATIENT AREAS <br />• The hamper will remain in the room until the patient has completed the chemotherapy regimen or the <br />container is full. <br />• Nursing will notify Housekeeping when the container is full or no longer needed in the room. <br />• Housekeeping will dispose of the contents of the hamper by transporting the sealed liner to a holding <br />area designated for this purpose. <br />• The liner with the waste will be placed in the appropriately labeled container in the holding area <br />awaiting disposal. This container will also be lined with a bag provided by the hazardous waste <br />hauler for this purpose only. When this container is full the liner must be sealed and the top secured. <br />• The full containers will be transported by a licensed hazardous waste hauler and their contents <br />incinerated. <br />• The hamper frame and top will be disinfected and stored in the equipment room when no longer <br />needed. <br />CATEGORY 4: OTHER TOXIC WASTE <br />1. Definition : Phenol and phenol -containing compounds, all gaseous anesthetic agents (i.e. Forane, <br />Ethrane, etc) and any other compounds designated hazardous in any amount (will be labeled by <br />pharmacy). <br />2. Compounds will be manifested and controlled by the Hospital Safety Officer. <br />
