M <br />Identification <br />Listing of pharmaceutical products/items that would serve as guidance to users for proper segregation <br />and/or disposal of waste. Since it costs by the pound to dispose of pharmaceutical waste, proper waste <br />segregation is cost efficient as well. <br />The following wastes are generally acceptable for sewering: <br />• Solutions in IV bags containing only <br />o saline solution <br />o lactate (i.e., Ringer's) <br />o nutrients such as glucose (i.e., D5W) <br />o vitamins <br />o potassium <br />0 other salts and electrolytes <br />o TPN without added medications <br />The following wastes are not acceptable for sewering: <br />• Liquid and solid pharmaceutical wastes, such as: <br />o IV bags containing biologically active materials (e.g., antibiotics, <br />painkillers, and antineoplastics) and controlled substances. <br />o TPN with added medications <br />The following wastes are acceptable for the PharmaSafety container: <br />• Waste partial, damaged, contaminated, unwanted medications <br />• Syringes, tubexes, carpujects, and sharps with residual (pourable) medication <br />• Partially used or residual prescription or over-the-counter medication <br />o Vials, tablets, capsules, powders, liquids, creams, lotions, eye drops, <br />suppositories, 1/2 tablet <br />• Residual or wasted narcotics and/or controlled drugs <br />• Narcotic patches (cut in halo i.e., Fentanyl patch <br />• Unopened and/or unused or expired medications including IV bags and tubing with residual <br />medication <br />• Infusion pump cassettes with residual medication <br />• Residual in syringe: <br />o Disposal of excess material - "wasting"— but not down sink. <br />o "Wasting" into liquid pharmaceutical container when injection is prepared <br />o Syringe need not enter container <br />Note: These medications from isolation room patients must be double -bagged for removal from <br />room prior to disposal in the PharmaSafety container. <br />The following items do not go in the PharmaSafety container: <br />• Product packaging <br />• Office paper <br />• Paper towels <br />• Gloves, gowns <br />• Linens <br />• Diapers <br />• Batteries <br />• Infectious (medical) waste <br />• Trace chemotherapy waste <br />
