Infection Control Policy/Procedure
Universal/Barrier Precautions
Page 2
LJ
H. Pulmonary resuscitation equipment, e.g. an ambo -bag
and oral airway, should be strategically located and
available for use if resuscitation is anticipated.
I. In patient care areas, spills of blood or other
body fluids should first be absorbed with paper
towels and discarded as infectious waste and then the
area decontaminated with a tuberculocidal agent
(Vesphene). For large spills of cultured or
concentrated infectious agents in the laboratory, the
contaminated area should be flooded with a liquid
germicide before cleaning, then decontaminated with a
fresh germicidal agent.* Gloves will be worn during
cleaning and decontamination in both settings.
J. Guerneys and tables potentially contaminated with
body substances will be wiped down with Vesphene
between patients.
K. Specimen containers that are visibly contaminated
will be wiped down with Vesphene before sending to
the lab. Specimen containers shall be leakproof.
L. Hands should always be washed before and after
contact with patients whether or not gloves are worn.
If hands/skin come in contact with body substances,
they should be immediately washed with soap and
water. If mucous membranes come in contact with
blood or body substance, they shall be immediately
flushed with water. In the case of inaccessibility
to running water (if it is shut off temporarily or
the health care worker is off-site), antiseptic hand
cleansers and paper towels or antiseptic towelettes
are provided. Hands shall be washed with running
water and soap as soon as feasible.
M. Protective equipment shall be handled
appropriately: linens potentially contaminated with
infective material shall be handled as infectious
linen and disposable items contaminated with blood or
body fluids shall be disposed of as infectious waste.
Safety glasses/goggles may be decontaminated and re-
used by the same individual.
III. Supplies
Gloves, safety glasses, masks, impervious gowns,
and Vesphene will be stocked on each nursing unit
and other departments anticipating their usage.
IV. Personnel not in compliance with this policy will be
counseled and if necessary, disciplined
*See Policy: Disinfectants and Cleaning Agents Used at Dameron
Hospital
