If a Geobacillus (Bacillus) stearothermophilus indicator has been placed in the load, DO NOT
discharge the load by pressing the "Send to Discharge" button. Call a Supervisor or Lead to insert
a San -I -Pak master key into the "Sharps" lock. Turn the lock to "Sharps" and then push the "Send
to Discharge" button. The chamber will move to the discharge area and wait. Open the blue
discharge doors and remove the indicator. Once the indicator has been retrieved, turn the key
back to "Off'. The chamber will continue on with the normal procedure of dumping the load and
returning home. The master key can be removed now from the "Sharps" lock.
2. Biological testing with Geobacillus (Bacillus) stearothermophilus will be done at least monthly.
Place the indicator in the middle of the medical waste load. Follow the standard operating
procedure to process the indicator. The results will be recorded and kept a minimum of three
years. In the case of a positive result (growth), stop operation at this point and notify the EVS
Director, Nurse Epidemiologist or Safety Officer. Contact Plant Operations/Engineering if an
equipment malfunction is suspected. Indicate on the San -I -Pak Inspection Log what appropriate
measures are being taken to correct the problem. Then take those corrective measures before
operation is resumed. A successful completion (no growth) of three (3) sterilized indicators in
three (3) consecutive cycles must be accomplished before operation can continue.
Procedure:
Unlock sterilizer door by turning hatch wheel to left until the locking bars release.
