Plan- Medical Waste Managem t Program Page 7 of 12
Unfixed(without formalin preservative added; fresh)placentas are considered biohazardous
waste. Unfixed placentas are stored in the Pathology refrigerator for up to ninety-six(96)hours
and then are handled as pathology waste per#4 above.
6. Pharmaceutical Waste:
All pharmaceutical waste will be separated from other medical waste and hazardous wastes
deposited in a specially marked, blue collection container labeled with the words "Incineration
Only." Chemotherapeutic and other hazardous pharmaceutical waste is to be segregated
separately and placed into black RCRA containers. Pharmaceutical waste containers shall be
considered "full" when they reach 2/3 capacity or the manufacturer's full line. When the
container is full, without compacting, the lid is to be capped or otherwise secured to prevent
loss of contents prior to disposal. Pharmaceutical waste containers are serviced at their installed
locations by either Stericycle or EVS personnel. The waste containers will be stored and
transported to the Biohazardous Waste Storage Area located near the shipping/receiving area
or the Central Hazardous Waste Storage Room located near the hospital morgue. These storage
areas will be locked at all times. Access will be limited to Environmental Services,Plant
Operations & Maintenance Department, or other authorized personnel. These containers are
picked up by Stericycle medical waste hauler for transport to an approved incineration facility
on a scheduled basis.
B. Medical Waste Storage Methods:
1. Worksite accumulation areas near waste generation sites(patient rooms, surgical suites,
procedure/treatment/examination rooms) include soiled utility rooms.
2. All medical waste will be collected and stored in the Biohazardous Waste Storage Area until
treated by Environmental Services personnel. All Biohazardous waste shall be stored, handled,
or transported in containers that are leak resistant, have tight fitting covers, and are kept clean
and in good repair. This area shall be marked with warning signs saying in English:
"CAUTION-BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA -UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS
KEEP OUT"
and in Spanish:
"CUIDADO -ZONE RESIDUOUS-BIOLOGICOS PELIGROSOS -PROHIBIDA LA
ENTRADA A PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS"
3. Biohazard bags and filled sharps containers shall not be stored for more than 7 days at a
temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This 7 day period begins when any waste has been
placed in the bag or container for storage purposes.
4. All reusable rigid containers that are used for accumulation, transportation and storage of
medical waste shall be washed and decontaminated every time they are emptied, unless the
container surfaces have been completely protected from contamination by disposable liners or
bags; containers shall be washed and decontaminated when they are visibly soiled.
5. Surfaces are washed and decontaminated with a germicidal (tuberculocidal) detergent solution;
the solution should be allowed contact with the surface for at least the period of time required
per manufacturer's specifications for tuberculocidal activity.
C. Medical Waste Treatment and Disposal Method:
1. Dameron Hospital treats medical waste on-site using steam sterilization via a Sani-Pak unit.
