Medical Waste Management Progran621an Page 6 of 8
per #3 above.
Fixed (with formalin preservative) placentas with residual formalin preservative will
be handled as pathology waste per #3 above.
5. Pharmaceutical Waste:
All pharmaceutical waste will be separated from other medical waste and hazardous
wastes deposited in a specially marked, blue and white collection container labeled
with the words "Incineration Only." When the container is full, without compacting,
the locking lid is to be secured to prevent loss of contents prior to disposal. Two (2)
tamper -evident seals are also to be in place. These containers are picked up by
Stericycle medical waste hauler for transport to an approved incineration facility on a
scheduled basis.
B. Medical Waste Storage Methods:
Worksite accumulation areas near waste generation sites (patient rooms, surgical
suites, procedure/treatment/examination rooms) include soiled utility rooms.
All medical waste will be collected and stored in the Biohazardous Waste Storage
Area until treated by Environmental Services personnel. All biohazardous waste shall
be stored, handled, or transported in containers that are leak resistant, have tight
fitting covers, and are kept clean and in good repair. This area shall be marked with
warning signs saying in English:
"CAUTION-BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA -
UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT"
and in 'Spanish:
"CUIDADO - ZONE RESIDUOUS-BIOLOGICOS PELIGROSOS -
PROHIBIDA LA ENTRADA A PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS°'
Biohazard bags and filled sharps containers shall not be stored for more than 7 days
at a temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This 7 day period begins when any
waste has been placed in the bag or container for storage purposes.
All reusable rigid containers that are used for accumulation, transportation and
storage of medical waste shall be washed and decontaminated every time they are
emptied, unless the container surfaces have been completely protected from
contamination by disposable liners or bags; containers shall be washed and
decontaminated when they are visibly soiled.
Surfaces are washed and decontaminated with a germicidal (tuberculocidal) detergent
solution; the solution should be allowed contact with the surface for a minimum of
10 minutes.
C. Medical Waste Treatment and Disposal Method:
Dameron Hospital treats medical waste on-site using steam sterilization via a Sani-
Pak unit. All solid waste is removed by a municipal waste hauler.
•
•
•
http://172.16.0.51policy/policy.nsf/7db0ebfd3e2l O600872571470079e3a4lf230e0l2cdfa90a0882575640061... 4/8/2010
