Sharps Handling and Disposal <br />after use. The container is labeled with the biohazard symbol and is rigid, <br />puncture resistant and when sealed for disposal is leak resistant and cannot be <br />reopened without great difficulty. <br />a. The sharps container may be placed on a clean barrier <br />(newspapers, paper towels) in the home. <br />b. Contaminated needles and syringes should be placed intact into <br />the container. <br />c. Other disposable sharp instruments (scalpel blades, etc.) will also <br />be placed directly into the sharps container. <br />d. If needle is to be removed from vacutainer, a mechanical device is <br />used. <br />e. If multiple sharps will not be used on the same patient, the sharps <br />container may be transported back to the Home Health office and <br />stored there until it is needed again. <br />f. If the patient requires the use of multiple sharps at various times, <br />the sharps container may be left in the home in a place that is <br />inaccessible to small children. In this case, the barrier does not need <br />to be used <br />2. Contaminated sharps will be transported and disposed of as infectious waste. <br />a. When the sharps container is 3/4 full or is no longer needed, it <br />will be securely closed and transported to the <br />office. <br />b. During transport of used sharps, the transporter (clinician) must <br />have in his/her possession the Limitedpuantity Hauling Exemption <br />and the Medical Wlaste Tracking Document. <br />c. Sharps containers will be transported to the hospital medical <br />waste area by the environmental care personnel who will have in <br />their possession the Medical Waste Tracking Document. <br />d. In addition, the procedure as outlined in the policy/procedure <br />Transport of Medical Waste Under the Limited Quantity Hauling Exemption <br />will be followed. <br />e.
