Where public water supplies are concerned, additional TABLE 2 <br /> requirements may be prescribed by the Department of Health COUNTY ORDINANCES IN CALIFORNIA <br /> Services: Prior to the release of the 1968 edition of this CONCERNING THE CONSTRUCTION AND DESTRUCTION OF WELTS <br /> report, only three counties and a few cities had adopted (As of December 1981) <br /> ordinances regulating the construction of water wells. In <br /> 1967, legislation was enacted authorizing the State (through <br /> the California Regional Water Quality Control Boards) to Ordinance Date <br /> require cities and counties to adopt satisfactory ordinances County Number Adopted Remarks <br /> governing well standards in critical areas. If they did not, <br /> the State would adopt such ordinances for the cities and Alameda 73-68 7/17/73 <br /> counties. (This procedure is outlined in Sections 13800 Butte 1845 8/2/77 <br /> through 13806 of the Water Code.) They are listed in Table 2. Six other counties Humboldt 897 12/21/72 <br /> have adopted ordinances that deal with specific kinds of Inyo 309 10/4/76 <br /> wells or conditions (as, for example, individual domestic Kings 365 1/13/76 <br /> wells only). While this latter group of ordinances provides Los Angeles 10075 9/1/70 <br /> protection for the users of water from the specified wells in Madera 412 3/16/76, <br /> these areas, they do little to protect the quality of the <br /> ground water resource (in contrast with the 33 counties Mariposa 373 9/18/73 <br /> listed in Table 2). Table 3 lists the six counties with Mendocino 1135 8/28/73 <br /> ordinances for specific kinds of wells. Thirty-four of the Merced 752 6/10/75 <br /> total of 39 county ordinances specify the standards presented Mono 75-459 8/26/75 <br /> in the 1968 edition, with modifications where appropriate Monterey 1967 5/29/73 <br /> (all of which are more stringent than those in the 1968 <br /> edition).
