2 -6 <br />Grinding and trommel screening of the material prior to composting has significantly <br />improved the quality of the final compost product. More mechanized processing has <br />included magnetic and eddy current separation for improved removal of iron and aluminum <br />components of the waste stream. The decision on the amount of preprocessing will be <br />determined by economics and the final use of the compost product. <br />Semi-solid materials such as grit, biosolids, food processing residue, food waste, garbage, <br />and liquid wastes such as grease, holding tank pumpings, and septic tank pumpings will be <br />placed on other materials such as ground green material or wood waste or recycled compost <br />and mixed as soon as possible to minimize the potential for leachate formation and odors. <br />The amount of these materials accepted will be limited by the availability of other <br />feedstocks. <br />Current Design /Processing OptionAlternatives <br />Alternative 1 . Figure '-I shows the layout fo r '/AVind row compost ing using a front end loader <br />to tu rn t he compost piles. Feedstocl< requ iri ng p reprocessing or grind i ng would be u nloaded <br />and processed in the RRF area. Ground and processed feedstocl< would be moved t o the <br />composting a rea using f ron t end loaders or dump truc l<s and plaoed into rough :ttlf/indrows. <br />Mixtures 'N ill be de t ermined using volumet ri c proport ions . Semi so lid and liquid f eedstocl<s <br />wou ld be tra nsported to the wWindrow area a nd depos ited di rect ly on t he rough wV'/i ndrows. <br />The qua ntity added \\'ould not exoee d t he quantity neoess a ry to raise the moist ure content <br />to d esira b le limits. If semi so lid and liqu id feedstocl <s are no t ava il ab le, water w ill be added <br />using a water t rucl-c The roug h Win drows wou ld then be m ixed us ing f ro nt end loaders. <br />Afte r m ixing , the Windrows wo ul d be formed i n fi nal oonfi guration approximately 8 feet high <br />and 16 feet wide at t he base. Windrows would be t urned as necessary t o maintain aerobio <br />oond itions and fo r pathogen reduotio n in accordance with 14 GGR, Seo t ion 17868.3 based <br />on 40 GFR , Part 603. Turning of vAAii ndrows would be usi ng front end loade rs. A 10 foot <br />'.vide ais le is pro'/ided be t ween pairs of \Nin dro ws t o allow aooess f o r the front end loader f or <br />efficient turning. In iti a l tu rn ing frequensy wou ld depend on the specific mixtu re being <br />somposted, but would be approx i mate ly every 2 t o 3 days for m ixtures containing MSW, <br />sludge, septis tanl< pump ings, and other h ighl y putresible materia ls. The turn i ng f requency <br />would be much less for green mate ri al and wood ',vast e approx i mately once every 1 t o 2 <br />wee l<s. Later in the p rocess dependi ng on the compost ing period , t he ~W i ndrows would be <br />turned about every 2 t o 4 weel<s . Water ',vou ld be added pri or t o t urn i ng as necessary using <br />a wat e r true l< to maint ain mo isture at the desired levels . The composting period It't'o uld be <br />approximately 4 to 8 weel<s depending on the qua li ty of t he produot desired and t he initial <br />f eedst ool< composit ion . I nitially, Forwa rd is planning to utili ze t his method as t he primary <br />a ltern ative. <br />Windrow Composting using a Windrow Turner.Alternative 2 . Figure 4§ shows the layout for <br />wW indrow composting using a Windrow turner. The process is the same as described above <br />exoept A loader will be used to create the windrows . and a wW indrow turner iswould be used <br />to mix t he feedstocl<s, create t he ttWi ndrows, and turn the wW indrows. The wW indrow <br />dimensions proposed are approximately 128 feet high and approximately 1548 feet wide at <br />the base. The space between Windrows is about 8 feet to provide access for a water truck <br />for water addition and for fire control.
