Handling Proceedures for Infectious Waste Disposal
Foothill Landfill
Infectious waste is landfilled at the Foothill Landfill in
cells dedicated to infectious waste, or along the edge of the
working face of other refuse. Under current operational
practices, 4,500 cubic yards of infectious waste can be safely
and effectively disposed. Additional persohnel and equipment
will be employed for greater amounts.
Cell Method
During dry weather ccmditiobs, a cell approximately three
feet high and ten feet wide is constructed. The transport
vehicle backs up into the cell, the infectious waste load is
dumped in the cell, and the vehicle drives away. Dirt is then
pushed off the edge of the cell, to completely cover the waste.
A cover of compacted dirt istprovided at the end of each day to a
thickness of at least six inches. The earth moving equipment
does not drive over the waste or come into contact with it at any
time.
Working Face Method
When the cell method is not used because of adverse weather
conditions, the infectious waste is disposed of along the edge of
the daily refuse working face. The transport vehicle backs up
near the edge of the working face, and dumps the infectious waste
along the edge of the face. Household refuse is then pushed over
the infectious waste to completely cover it -without ever driving
directly over the waste. No equipment comes into contact with
the infectious waste by this method. After the refuse has been
compacted at the end of the day, at least six inches of soil are
spread over the refuse to cover it completely.
Protective Equipment
Gloves and coveralls are worn by all landfill employees and
transport vehicle drivers to prevent exposure to any infectious
waste. If any protective equipment is contaminated by the
infectious waste, it is disposed of along with infectious waste.
Decontamination
Emptied infectious waste containers, Transport vehicles, and
landfill equipment that becomes contaminated with infectious
waste will be decontaminated using a hypochlorite solution with
500 ppm available chlorine. If a worker comes into contact with
infectious waste he will immediately discard any protective
clothing with the infectious waste and shower if necessary.
