low k" KLEINFELDER
Soil -gas concentrations were measured by Hydro -Search on April 28 with an
HNU PID device, using 10.2 eV bulb. A PID can detect only hydrocarbons
that have ionization potentials at or below the ionization potential of
the bulb being used. Hydro -Search intended to monitor the soil borings
for methane concentration. Methane has an ionization potential of greater
than 12 eV, making a PID equipped with a 10.2 eV bulb ineffective in
detecting methane.
Hydro -Search returned to the site on May 6, 1988, with a combustible gas
analyzer. The borings (MB -1 through MB -10) were uncovered and the open
holes monitored with a combustible gas analyzer.
The following is a list of PID and combustible ga7s readings made at the
site:
Gas Monitoring PID Combustible Gas Monitoring PID Combustible
Boring Reading Gas Reading -Boring--7 Reading Gas
---------- If
Reading
MB -1
0
ppmv
0%
MB -6
0
ppmv
0%
MB -2
0
ppmv
0%
MB -7
0.2
ppmv
0%
MB -3
0
ppmv
0%
M3-8
0.2
DDMV
0%
MB -4
0
ppmv
0%
MB -9
0.6
ppmv
-0%1
MB -5
0
ppmv
0%
",,MB -10
1.6
ppmv
0%
The readings at MB -9 and MB -10 were made in soil borings near a diesel
DumD located at the southwest corner of the maintenance garage. These
readings may be due to diesel contamination as diesel -stained soil was
observed about the diesel pump.
4.5 WATER SAMPLING
Water samples were collected from a domestic water well located near the
maintenance garage (see Figure 2) on April 28, 1988 and May 6, 1988.
Table 1 lists the sample number, sample description, and date the sample
was collected.
104-88-683 8
