Foster Farms
i
1000 Swan Street i
P.O. Box 831
Livingston, CA 95334
July 3, 2001
Johnny Yoakum
San Joaquin County Department of Environmental Health C-
304 East Weber Street s--
3'd Floor _n
Stockton, CA 95202
e
Subject: Catastrophic Poultry Loss on July 2, 2001 0
Dear Mr.Yoakum:
We request an allowance to dispose of dead turkeys at the Foothill Sanitary Landfill for one time
only. Our Flood 2 Poultry Ranch, located at 24801 Flood Road, in Linden California,
experienced a power failure to one of the poultry barns on the afternoon of July 2, 2001. An
electrical breaker tripped, and the backup systems that we have in place malfunctioned. As a
result, an estimated 6,000 turkeys died of excessive heat and suffocation. The estimated
combined weight is 80,000 lbs.
Rendering plants will not accept such a large amount of meat on short notice, they don't have
capacity to accept so much from us at one time. Most loads of mortality have to be scheduled in
advance so the meat can be processed before it putrefies.
The approved landfill in Stanislaus County(Crows Landing Landfill)is approximately two hours
away, and stops accepting loads at 2 p.m. We will not be able to get the loads there in time, and
tomorrow, July 4, they are closed.
This is a one-time occurrence.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at (209) 394-5352.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Spear
Environmental Affairs Assistant Manager
Foster Farms
CC: James Marnatti,Foster Farms
Matt Rickard,Foster Farms Turkey Production
