Soil Suitability / Nitrate Loading Study
Thornton Road Trailer Parking Facility ■ Lodi, California
December 15, 2021 ■ Terracon Project No. NA217079
Responsive ■Resourceful ■Reliable 12
The method takes into account the development area, soil denitrification factor, rainfall volume,
rainfall nitrate concentration, waste effluent quantity, and waste effluent nitrate concentration. The
formula, assumptions and calculations used for the analysis are shown in Appendix F. The units
of nitrate used in the mass balance equation are nitrate-N, whose maximum drinking water
contaminant level (MCL) is 10.0 mg/L.
2.1 Chemical and Physical Properties of Soil
2.1.1 Chemical and Physical Soil Properties
Terracon reviewed the USDA NRCS Web Soil Survey and USDA Soil Survey of San Joaquin
County (1992) for information regarding Devries sandy loam and Acampo sandy loam (Section
1.5). Selected physical and chemical properties for the soil types are listed in the following table.
Table 6.
Physical and Chemical Properties*
Soil Name
/ Map
Symbol
Depth
(in)
USDA
Texture
Unified Soil
Classification
Clay
(%)
Permeability
(in/hour)
Soil
reaction
(pH)
Salinity
(mmhos/cm)
Septic tank
absorption
fields
Devries
Sandy
loam (149)
0-13 Sandy loam SM 7-18 2.0-6.0 6.6-8.4 <2
Severe;
cemented pan13-28
Sandy loam,
fine sandy
loam
SM 7-18 2.0-6.0 6.6-8.4 <2
28-80 Indurated -----------<2
Acampo
sandy
loam
(101)
0-19 Sandy loam SM 7-18 2.0-6.0 6.1-7.8 <2
Moderate:
cemented pan
19-47
Sandy loam,
fine sandy
loam,
coarse
sandy loam
SM 7-15 2.0-6.0 6.6-804 <2
47-49 Indurated --------------
49-60 Cemented --------------
*U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, 1992, Soil Survey of San Joaquin County, California.
Selected USDA physical and chemical properties
millimhos per centimeter (mmhos/cm)
2.1.2 Mass Transport Soil Properties
The longer the effluent remains near the surface, the more treatment is enhanced due to natural
processes within the soil. The percolation test has revealed that the onsite soils have adequate
percolation rates at shallow (3 and 3.5 feet bgs) and (6.3 feet bgs). Refer to Sections 1.6.6 and
1.6.7 for additional discussion.
2.2 Groundwater Analysis
2.2.1 Regional Groundwater
