3 . Any employee back filling around the tanks shall watch for equipment dumping pea - gravel around the <br /> tanks . Use proper tools to backfill under the first 3 feet of tank. Poly tubes or flat nose shovels will be used to <br /> prevent damage to the tanks . When pushing pea - gravel with push rods , make sure there are no hazards around <br /> tank pit area . <br /> 4 . Working around fiberglass can be hazardous ; FRP dust should be kept to a minimum . Always use protective <br /> gloves , masks , safety glasses , Tyveks ' suits & hoods . <br /> 5 . Working around FRP pipe can be dangerous ; the pipe is under constant pressure to ensure its integrity . <br /> Don ' t straddle pipe run , don ' t drop heavy objects on pipe . Make sure all joints are set up before applying <br /> pressure . <br /> TANK REMOVAL <br /> 1 . Excavating around live wires can be very dangerous . No employee shall engage in a tank removal <br /> without a safety meeting for that site . The employee shall read the site safety & work plan for that site . When <br /> purging the tank, no work will be conducted on the tank system until the LEL levels are below 7% minimum . No <br /> one will smoke or have an open flame within 100 feet of tank pit area . Combustible vapors are heavier than air , <br /> the vapors can settle at the lowest point of the tank hole . <br /> 2 . When removing tanks, stay out of the path of the equipment , such as : Backhoes , Skidsters , & Cranes . Don ' t <br /> get between tank & fixed objects . Stay away from ends of tank as that ' s the weakest point . Avoid getting under <br /> tanks when they are being lifted . Do not wrap guide rope around your hands or waist . Keep extra rope to a <br /> minimum . Make sure tanks are checked when placed on ground or truck. <br /> Machinery and Vehicles <br /> 1 . Only authorized persons shall operate machinery or equipment . <br /> 2 . Loose or frayed clothing , or long hair, dangling ties , finger rings , etc . , shall not be worn around moving <br /> machinery or other sources of entanglement . <br /> 3 . Machinery shall not be serviced , repaired , or adjusted while in operation , nor shall oiling of moving parts be <br /> attempted , except on equipment that is designed or fitted with safeguards to protect that person <br /> performing the work . <br /> 4 . Employees shall not work under vehicles supported by jacks or chain hoists, without protective blocking <br /> that will prevent injury if jacks or hoists should fail . <br /> 5 . Air hoses shall not be disconnected at compressors until hose line has been bled . <br />
