LeakDetect. net
ELD Pre -Backfill Instructions for Owners and Contractors
Concept .
A Proprietary Chemical Marker or Tracer is added to the containment/s to be tested, such as an
underground storage tank (UST) , or pipeline . Once the Chemical Marker/Tracer gas is added to the tank,
product, and vapor piping primary containment any leak in the containment would carry the Chemical
Marker/Tracer out into the surrounding secondary containment and/or soil. By utilizing test ports vapor
samples can be taken from the secondary containments and/or soil and analyzed using sensitive,
sophisticated analytical equipment. If the Chemical Marker/Tracer is detected outside of the containment,
a leak may exist.
Pre-Backfill Testing (Pretest) :
ELD testing has a greater sensitivity than the federal standard which utilizes conventional testing
methods . For example, a 60 psi pneumatic pressure test of a 150 foot 1 . 5" pipeline with a leak rate
of 1psi per-hour equates to an 8760 gallon per year leak rate. Most 2 " diameter pressure gauges
would not detect this leak rate in one hour.
Preparation .
1 . Before testing can begin all permits and site information must be acquired by the contractor or
owner. LDT will supply all documents required as requested.
2 . The contractor must notify LDT if any component in the system was installed that is not full
vacuum compatible .
Setup :
1 . During the setup portion of the test a contractor is required to be present onsite .
a. The contractor is required to be prepared to repair any accessible component at the facility .
b . Access ports to the secondary containment are required to be installed by the contractor
prior to LDT arriving at the site .
c . Access to the top of the vent risers, tank sumps and UDC ' s may be required.
2 . Tanks with a vapor interstice are install ready to proceed
3 . Tanks with a liquid interstice will be inoculated with a water soluble liquid chemical marker.
Author David Rabb 2of 8
Version 210505
