I recommend the following measures to address the excess nitrate loading effects of the
proposed project:
a. Require the use of a nitrogen removal treatment system to achieve at least 50% N
removal, (i.e., effluent concentration of 30 mg-N/L); the system should be NSF 245
certified or equal (https://www.nsf.org/services/by-industry/water-wastewater/onsite-
wastewater/nitro gen-reduction);
b. Require pressure distribution leachfield, instead of gravity flow, which can allow an
additional 20% to 30% increase in nitrogen removal within the dispersal field and soil
environment, as compared with the proposed gravity leach beds. (For reference see:
https://www.chesgpeakebgy.net/documents/Final OWTS Expert Panel WQGIT approv
ed 07142014.p f),
c. With the above mitigations and revised values for rainfall recharge and wastewater flow,
a resultant nitrogen value of less than 10 mg-N/L can be achieved.
